Bluetooth has become a common technology used for wireless transfers, and through especially mobile phones the technology has even become an important part of many users’ lives, but not just when transferring data between phone and computer though, but also through wireless headsets. The perhaps biggest drawback with Bluetooth is its low transfer speed at about 1Mbps. Now when Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has put forth the plans for the next generation Bluetooth format the transfer speed is not something they will leave behind. Through basing the technology on UWB (Ultra-WideBand) they’ve been able to reach theoretical max at 100Mbps, 100 times faster than today’s format.
Bluetooth will still be focusing on short range data transfers and is not expected to become a threat to e.g. Wi-Fi. They hope to be able to stream both high resolution video and audio from portable units.
