Toshiba, world’s second largest flash manufacturer after Samsung, seems to be the next major manufacturer to venture for the seductive solid state drive market. Toshiba is planning to launch three drives with capacities from 32 GB up to 128 GB, with a 64 GB model in between. The drives will be of both 1.8″ and 2.5″ sizes, use the SATA interface, with manufacturing starting in May 2008. The drives have been rated at maximum [sequential] write speed of 40MB/s and read speed of 100MB/s. This is a lot higher than the currently commercially available SSDs, rated at ~30/65 MB at best.
