2.5″ Solid State Drives vs. mechanical harddrives

The laptop market has really started to adapt the new Solid State Drive technology. All of the major PC builders offer SSD as an option to the regular mechanical drive, at least with the more expensive performance models. Solid State Drives is not a given though and this is quite clearly shown by the fact that not all of the major harddrive manufacturers have decided to start making their own SSD’s. Even so, Solid State Drives has some serious advantages over the mechanical relative, for example lightning fast access times and durability.

Over at TechReport they decided to test how the different harddrive technologies stand up to each other and even how the technologies are different from one another. They’ve tested 7 different 2.5″ harddrives whereof three are based on SSD technology and the remaining four models are mechanical.

As expected the two different types of harddrives have their advantages and disadvantages and fit into different segments, but we’re getting closer and closer to a point where the only thing holding the SSD technology back is the price.
