200GB 2.5″ harddrive this year

Today the biggest 2.5″ harddrives can store up to 160GB of data and considering the size of the drive this is quite impressive. These capacities have been made possible thanks to the technology perpendicular recording. When the technology was introduced they had plas for a storage density at 230 GB/in2, but so far it’s Seagate that achieved the best density with 132 Gb/in2. ALPS Technologies in Japan has now announced that it will demonstrate a head for 2.5″ harddrives capable of increasing the capacity up to 170 GB/in2 and make it possible to manufacture 2.5″ harddrives at 200GB this year.
