We’ve been reporting on nVidia’s progress with its multi-GPU-technology SLI and at the same time how we’re getting closer and closer the launch of ATi’s equivalent Crossfire. The desktop version allows you two run of these allows you two run graphic cards in parallel and thus gaining a lot of performance. Gigabyte feels though that “only” two cards are too little and has taken up the task to run four cards in parallel. GA-8N-SLI-Quad Royal is card like no other and even if there so far are only reference boards available it is looking mighty impressive.
It seems that it has solved this by using both nForce4’s northbridge for AMD’s socket 939 and Intel’s socket 775. Since nForce4 is limited to using one card in 16x, or two in 8x each, this card is equipped with 2 16x and two 8x. Which in turn makes it possible to run two cards in 16x, or four in 8x.
The thing that is quite surprising is that the board is built for Intel’s socket 775 and not AMD’s socket 939, whcih perhaps would’ve been better if they wanted to reach out to the extreme gamers.
Unfortunately there isn’t much information available at the time and since neither we, nor babelfish, has managed very well with translating the text these pictures are the best we have to offer.
