Everyone might not be aware of the fact that Folding@Home is actually a way for everyone to help Stanford and partners to find treatments for cancer and other protein-related diseases. One of the people that is fully aware of this is nitteo, a forum member at Overclock.net and also a member of their Folding@home team. Nitteo was using a number of Core 2 Quad Q6600 system for crunching as many PPDs as possible. But now that the graphics card manufactures have adapted the GPGPU functionality to include protein folding, Nitteo decided to sell his C2Q Q6600 farm in favor of a farm based on graphics cards.

Nitteo has built no less than 16 systems which all in all have 51 GPUs dedicated to Folding@home. All of them are GeForce 8800 models and can squeeze out about 265,200 PPD, something few other users can match, if any?

There’s more about this ambitious Folding@home farm over at Overclock.net, where they also have more pictures of the systems.
