Finally it seems AMD is to release 65nm chips, a bit sooner than some expected. The Inquirer recently wrote that AMD’s production manager in Dresden, Toralf Gueldner, said that AMD has been able to produce 65nm products since June. According to Gueldner every AMD plant is to be converted to 65nm or lower by mid ’07 and that AMD has already produced their first 45nm test chips. The first 65nm chips will ship during October as the plants are in full production this month. Concerning former press releases from AMD we have reason to believe that these new chips will be Opterons, but we’re not sure.
But Gueldner also talked about converting their Fab 30 to be using 300mm waffers instead of 200mms. AMD’s also planned to rename Fab 30 to Fab 38 once the convertion is complete and produktion should be up and running in Q1 ’08. But we’re of course interested in what AMD’s new 65nm CPU’s can do, in terms of performance. Will AMD be able to reclaim the performance crown that now belongs to Intel and Conroe? We should be able to report an answer in a couple of months, until then sit back and enjoy watching Conroe breaking every record possible.
