Toshiba has now announced the first HD DVD burner for notebooks and as it should it is a slim format model. All to fit inside the narrow chassis laptops have. Toshiba SD-L902A is the name of the unit which can read and write HD DVD media but also regular DVD and CD media. Toshiba is expected to display the new unit during CEATEC JAPAN 2006, which starts on October 3. The first units will not appear until the end of the year. Among stationary users there won’t be much of a fuss, but with its slim format and height of only 12.7 millimeters quite a lot of laptops will be blessed with an SD-L902A.
Toshiba has not released any information about the price of the unit but the question is if we really want to know. Especially considering that regular 5.25″ burner for the HD DVD format will cost several hundred, SD-L902A with its slim format will be even more expensive.
