Nicholas Negroponte and his One Laptop Per Child foundation seems to have underestimated the costs of its baby and this has forced them to raise the price of the laptop. The laptop will now cost $134 and will then drop to $100 at the end of 2008 and $50 in 2010. The laptop comes with a Linux-OS, a 500MHz AMD processor, 128MB RAM, 500MB flash memory for permanent storage, four USB ports, wireless network with the possibility to create small local network through an ad hoc mode. They have developed a special dual display; one with full colors to be used indoors or in weaker lighting, while the other can be used in direct sunlight.
At the same time they have been working hard to create a secure laptop. Thanks to the fact that they have been able to work from the base and up they have been able to create a computer which is almost impossible to crash and the reason is simply that they want to work around the need for any third party software and that the users will perhaps not be as aware of the dangers of the online world as people in the western world. With the help of outside experts, which have been impressed by the security of the laptop, they have been able to create a laptop that will be able to handle the most. And if that doesn’t help the laptop will automatically upload all vital information to a central server as a last precaution.
