It namely costs Sony 840 USD to manufacture the 60GB model of PlayStation 3, which results in a loss of 241.35 USD per sold PS3 60GB. If we look at the budget model with a 20GB harddrive the retail price is 499 USD and the manufacture price at marginally lower 805.85 USD. A loss of 306.85 USD per sold video game console.
There’s no doubt that PlayStation 3 costs quite a lot, but it’s also quite obvious that you get a lot of value for your money, if you make use of all of the features. Microsoft will according to similar information lose about 126 USD with each sold Xbox 360 console, which in turn costs 399 USD, and interesting comparison. It would be interesting to see similar information about Nintendo and its Wii console.
