As the first days have passed after the launch of Playstation 3 in Japan and North America it has turned up some unpleasantness. It namely seems that older HDTV sets with support for only 480i/p and 1080i have to settle for 480p instead of 1080i when the users are playing with their new console. There is no certain answer for why the console downscales instead of upscales, partly because Sony hasn’t replied to these reports, but the really sad about this is that the pictures downscales much worse than it upscales. Whether this is something that will be fixed with future software updates remains to be seen, but it’s a blow to the face to anyone who owns an HDTV without 720p support.
