Playstation 3 and Wii were finally launched in the USA and Japan earlier this month, alas not here in Europe (Wii will be coming soon though). What’s perhaps just as important as the console self is the games you have to play with it. Many consoles have been released and gone under despite their impressive hardware (Jaguar, 3DO, etc.) and this is simply because of the lack of games. 1up has taken a closer look at the launch titles for the major consoles through the ages and a bit surprising it’s in fact the original Playstation which has the worst line up of all.
The difference between the consoles are quite small though, although Xbox 360 stands out a little with a pretty high average, which perhaps surprise a lot of people as the console has been criticized for its games. But you should then remember that this is an average and it doesn’t say much about the peaks or scrap, which is what is stated to be Xbox 360’s real problem, no real strong titles until the recently launched Gears of War which has given the sales a real boost.
Playstation 3 has in turn rather few launch titles and only one games that sticks out from the mediocre crowd, Resistance: Fall of Man. Wii is in a similar position with Zelda as the only games pulling up the average, on the other hand it does so quite a lot.
Best through the ages is Nintendo 64, but the the console only had two launch titles, which both received good grades, but if you look past this it’s GameCube which has the highest average and if one wants to see a trend here it seems Nintendo’s softer touch with the third party developers has lead to more games but also a lower average among them.
