Samsung recently presented a new memory technology called OneDRAM that will open up new possibilities for mobile units such as mobile phones and PDAs. OneDRAM is a circuit which uses both SRAM and DRAM technology for storing data and Samsung has chosen this approach to make it as suitable as possible for mobile units. SRAM and DRAM are often used in combination with two processor circuits in for example mobile phones, one communication processor and one media processor. Instead of integrating both SRAM and DRAM circuits into the unit Samsung has developed a circuit that can do both of their jobs. Thus the name, Fusion.

“Along with the faster data processing speeds between the processors, the OneDRAM reduces power consumption by 30 percent, lessens the number of chips needed and minimizes area coverage by 50 percent, resulting in a five-fold increase in the speed of cell phone and gaming console operations, longer battery life and slimmer handset designs.”

Samsung is planning on introducing OneDRAM in the first handheld devices during the second half of 2007 and we’re looking forward to seeing the real advantages mobile phones manufacturers will gain from this promising technology.
