A peek at KDE4

KDE4 has appeared a few times among the news and this is simply because we’re closing in on the first big update of one of the most popular alternative desktop environments for a very long time. The fact is, if we’re to be a bit imaginative, that KDE4 doesn’t have to be unique to Linux when it’s released. Qt 4, the libraries which KDE4 is built from, has been released under GPL for other platforms as well, not just Linux. Even if “KDE for Windows” feels highly unlikely it is a very remote possibility. More believable is perhaps KDE4 for OSX or any other BSD-based operating system.

The article over at All about Linux takes a shallow look at KDE4 as they study the graphics and usage of this, something you usually leave for last when you’re working on such a big project like this one. KDE4 will use a quite complex start menu, but there are already alternative menus under development. We recommend you to take a look at these(e.g. this one) as they are looking quite promising.

Overall the article offers short presentation of the corner stones Phonon, Solid and Plasma, which all are important parts for the success of KDE4.
