New PCIe power connector

Small preview image

We recently reported about the new PCI Express 2.0 specification and now the next piece of news for PCI Express graphics cards arrives, namely a new power connector. Today’s 6-pin connector has a maximal capacity at 75W and several high-end cards already use two of these to get the power they need. These connectors will be replaced by an 8-pin connector that will be able to deliver even more power. An effective solution, but we would much rather have seen a lower consumption as the answer to the ever-growing power-hunger of the graphics cards we have today (not to mention the ones coming).
