KDE vs Gnome is a constant debate and it’s pretty understandable as they are the two dominating desktop environments for Linux, although not the only ones. Little more than a year ago, Linus Torvalds made a statement where he showed his dislike with Gnome:s strategy. He said that Gnome is taking the whole “making things easy” way too far. He has now expanded his thoughts in a conversation in the Linux Foundation’s Desktop Architects mailing list. It all comes down to that Torvalds wants Linux to be simple but that you should be able to dig deeper when you feel you have the need to, even through the GUI (Graphical User Interface).

Gnome’s is more like making things simpler by hiding the complex environment behind the GUI. Desktoplinux has published an interesting analysis of the conversation between Torvalds and Christian Schaller, senior GNOME developer, well worth reading for those who wants to know more about Gnome’s goals and Torvalds’ view on how GUIs should work.
