Whenever people are talking about optical storage formats today it’s mainly Blu-ray and HD DVD that are the most common topics, but that doesn’t mean they are the most sold. According to new market surveys, Blu-ray and HD DVD will only cover 2% of the total optical disc market. The same survey claims that the demand for DVD discs with dual layers, DVD+R/-R DL, will double in 2007. From 90 million DVD DL discs up to 200 million DVD DL discs in 2007, which would be a 122% increase. The reason for this is probably because there will be a whole lot of DVD media with HD material as this is a considerably cheaper solution that the “real” HD formats.
