LinuxBIOS is simply a project dedicated to building a BIOS based on Linux. We reported a while back about how AMD had released the BIOS for Gigabyte M57SLI-S4 free to the public, which felt like a fun project, although a bit too hardcore for most. LinuxBIOS has now announced that it has managed to fit as much as LinuxBIOS, kernel, X server, Matchbox (window manager), BusyBox and rxvt on a 2MB BIOS chip. It takes about 8 seconds for the computer to start up and load the window manager (video) and it does this completely without any other kind of storage than the BIOS chip. The developers says that the process can probably be sped up even further. Truly impressive.
