SpinPoint S166 is the name of the latest 3.5″ harddrive series from Samsung and during the development of the new S166 series Samsung claims to have spent a lot of energy on improving the performance and at the same time reducing the noise. Samsung SpinPoint S166 is only available with 80GB and 160GB capacity, but the level of noise is suppose to be 15 percent lower than the equivalent models from the competition. Samsung points out that this makes the S166 series extra suitable for Media Center PCs or office computers where the level of noise is important.
“The S166 Series has a spin speed of 7,200rpm and provides an 8MB buffer. The Series features the SATA 3.0Gbps interface and includes Native Command Queuing (NCQ). The drives are also available with a PATA interface for customers who require this application.”
We will have to wait and see if Samsungwill launch even bigger models in the S166 series, but it’s nice to see more silent harddrives while waiting for the SSD units to arrive.
