Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company has now announced that it is planning to start its 45nm manufacturing in September, 2007. The technology will be used for making several new circuits, but will be especially useful for SoC (system-on-chip) circuits for smaller devices where the lack of physical space is pretty obvious.
“TSMC’s 45nm general purpose and high performance process (GS) provides more than double the density and a greater than 30 percent speed enhancement over the previous generation at similar leakage power, which is especially critical to support applications in PC, networking, and wired communication.”
When the 45nm manufacturing process starts rollin’ it’s up to the circuit manufacturers to make use of the new technology. TSMC proves that it has no intention of being left behind in the race for more refined processes and with a 45nm process ready, we’re really looking forward to the next step.
