Samsung SpinPoint M5 is the next harddrive series from Samsung with focus on digital multimedia, but this one is different from Samsung’s own SpinPoint S166 and WD’s AV series; this one is of the 2.5″ format. SpinPoint M5 will be available at capacities between 60GB and 160GB, using only a single platter. Samsung also has a 250GB model using dual platters under development. SpinPoint M5 is mainly intended for mobile units and home electronics, like stationary DVD recorders and similar devices. Just as expected the two sales arguments for the new series are the level of noise and the power consumption, something Samsung has been able to keep low.
“The M5 Series has been developed specifically for portable consumer electronics, where the key to success lies in controlling noise, vibration and power consumption. Samsung’s SpinPoint M5 hard drives are fifteen-percent quieter and use five-percent less energy than other models with the same storage capacity. The low-noise, low-power features are attractive to notebook PC or tablet PCs users.”
The new M5 harddrives spin at 5400 RPM and comes with an 8MB memory buffer and the 1.5Gbps SATA interface. The mass production will start in the middle of April which means that we should see the SpinPoint M5 series sometime in May.
