Dell has announced its venture with the Solid State Drive technology by announcing that its Latitude D420 ultra-mobile and D620 ATG semi-rugged notebooks can now be had with a 1.8″ SSD harddrive. The 1.8″ SSD drive has a storage capacity at 32GB and it’s no surprise that Dell have chosen its two most portable and durable computers. Some of advantages of SSD devices are a lower power consumption and the shock protection, important factors for these kinds of platforms. Dell claims that a SSD harddrives have twice the durability of a mechanical harddrive and that the computer will break long before the harddrive will.
Dell has chosen to use a SSD drive from SanDisk and the price of the new “harddrive” will be 549 USD on the American market. The new option will appear on the European and Asian market soon.
Dell seems to be taking SSDs for serious and we look forward to more news about this.
“A solid state drive is an excellent storage technology for our mobile users,” said Kevin Kettler, chief technology officer at Dell. “We are committed to leading the industry in delivering these new drives and will offer them across Dell’s next generation of Latitude products.”
