AMD is closing in on one of its most important processor launches in many years and the new K10/Barcelona architecture has a touch task ahead of itself. AMD has made a lot of changes to its popular K8 architecture, but now it seems that there will be more changes than just the actual circuit. AMD will according to DailyTech launch a whole new series of high-end processors and just like the Pentium brand, the Athlon name is expected to retire. AMD’s new high-end series in the K10 family will be named Phenom instead of Athlon, the name is suppose to come from the word phenomenal, hinting of the performance? Only AMD’s PR team knows.
For example, AMD’s dual-core Kuma processor will be named Phenom X2 and the quad-core sibling will be named Phenom X4. This also applies to AMD’s enthusiast series; Agena FX will be Phenom FX.
Phenom is pronounced as an abbreviated version of the word “phenomenal.” AMD’s guidance states that the company will promote its Phenom X4 and X2 processors under the premise that Phenom allows its users to “experience the Phenomenal.””
AMD hasn’t confirmed this, but it at least seems that AMD’s K10 family will have a new naming pattern, by the looks a phenomenal one.
