Solaris was one of the most popular alternative operating systems of the nineties, but somewhere along the way the OS lost its former glory. A lot of this is said to be because of the growing popularity of Linux, but this is something Sun is hoping to change. Solaris is based on UNIX, the same source that inspired the creation of Linux, and the two have a lot of things in common. According to a report published by ZDNet, Sun has started a new project that will make Solaris more like Linux. The man that will do this is none less than the founder of Debian, Ian Murdock, and the man himself made some comments during Sun’s JavaOne event where he said that Solaris has to become “more familiar.” Anyway, we have to say that the return of Solaris is something we’re really looking forward to, not to mention what Solaris will contribute.
