Fujitsu has, according to recent information, developed a new storage technology that will make it possible to increase the storage capacity pf a regular harddrive with up to 500%. The report about Fujitsu’s progress was published at Nikkei.net where they claim that the basic idea is to store and read data on a smaller given surface. To be able to achieve this, Fujitsu has used some new material for its harddrive platters to get better and more reliable data, even when storing the data on smaller surfaces. Fujitsu is currently working on the harddrive’s read/write heads that have to be optimized for handling the smaller bits, but we shouldn’t expect any product based on the new technology until 2009. Increasing the storage capacity six fold in two years would be a major accomplishment.
