XFX released its series of GeForce 8600 graphics cards a while back and it didn’t take long before someone discovered something odd with the cartons. The drooling dog on the front namely has a hidden message, which the people over at Guru3D picked up on. If you look closely, you can clearly read E-V-G-A. Which in turn is one of XFX’ biggest competitors on the graphics card market. Someone at the XFX marketing department probably considered this a fun gimmick, which we can’t deny, but it seems that EVGA was not impressed. EVGA has namely sued XFX for using the EVGA brand without permission.
“XFX can get a fine of € 250.000 if it does not change the picture, as EVGA claims that XFX is using their name without permission. it only concerns the boxes of the XFX GeForce 8600GT, and the verdict means that these cards will not be allowed to be sold in the region of Muchen, Germany in he current form.”
What may have started as an internal PR joke could become a costly affair, but there are apparently already new boxes shipping. Now without the hidden message. Whether EVGA will settle for this or not, remains to be seen.
