Richard Stallman founded The GNU project in 1984. The project set out to develop the operating system GNU (GNU’s Not Unix) to complete UNIX, the most common OS of the time. GNU was completely open source when it was launched (and still is), and Stallman was a real forerunner and most certainly an idol to many in the open source community. Today, GNU lives on in the form of Linux distributions (more about this at Wikipedia). At HardwareLogic they’ve published an interview with Stallman where we find out what drove Stallman into founding the GNU project and gave birth to the open source movement we have today. Some very interesting reading for those who are interested in Linux, GNU and open source in general.
