AMD has a new series of Athlon X2 processors coming, all with considerably lower power consumption, but this is just the tip of AMD’s energy efficient iceberg. It has namely launched several new energy efficient processors, among others the integrated Geode LX 800 with a neat power consumption of a mere 0.9W. The perhaps most interesting processor is AMD’s Sempron 2100+, which is based on the AMD64 architecture and despite that comes with a TDP at 9W. According to AMD, this single-core processor will work at 1GHz and can be cooled with fanless cooling, making it the first AMD64 processor officially capable of this.

“This processor will provide particular advantages for designers focused on delivering high performance and functionality in single board computing and embedded client systems and is compatible with the recently announced AMD M690T chipset. It also features the high shock and vibration specification Socket S1, offering high reliability for ruggedized computing.”
