ASUS OCgear – smooth graphics card overclocking

ASUS OCgear is one of the products ASUS will present at this year’s Computex and it’s nothing less than an external control device that is connected to the graphics card. ASUS will present a number of GeForce 8600 GT cards that will be shipped with OCgear and let the user overclock or control functions of the graphics card through the interface of the device. OCgear is installed in a 5.25″ slot, but we’re not certain of how the device interacts with the graphics card. At TweakTown they’ve published some information about the device that is described as an internal version of ASUS XG Station, whether this means that the graphics card is fitted into the OCgear device or if the card is still installed in the PCIe slots of the motherboard, we don’t know.

Anyway, this would make it considerably easier to configure the graphics card, both frequencies, fan speed and other settings.

“It also displays the GPU temperature, allows you to adjust the fan speed and displays how many FPS you’re getting. It also allows you to adjust the volume of your system, but it’s unclear if this only works with Asus motherboards or any sound card or onboard solution.”

It’s going to be interesting to see how OCgear actually works and what kind of price and availability we’re dealing with. We will know more in just a few days, when ASUS will reveal more about this device.
