Earlier this year something quite odd happened. Dell, the company we’ve all gotten accustomed to as the biggest PC builder on Earth, started losing ground and was actually surpassed by HP. Since then Dell has continued to lose further ground and HP has improved its sales, thus the trend continues. This has forced Dell to reconsider and try other channels than only via direct sales over the Internet or the phone. Dell PCs can now be purchased at Wal-mart and other large chains. HP has reported a strong growth and has a positive outlook on the future, Dell on the other hand is reducing the workforce and reconstructing to get back on top. Overall PC sales have been good this year and even though Vista hasn’t resulted in the boost we had anticipated PC sales are improving.
According to a report by IDC, especially East Asia is a very strong market right now, excluding Japan which is doing quite poorly at the moment. PC sales are high above average and the market is looking very bright. Worldwide sales are up by 12%, year to year, for the second quarter and are expected to grow throughout the year.
Dell remains the leading PC builder in North America, but perhaps it’s just a matter of time before HP claims the top spot there as well.
