All the different components of a computers all have one thing in common. They are all expected to become physically smaller. The harddrive is certainly one of these, even if the outer measurements aren’t getting any smaller the drives are instead filled with more content, or capacity. We often hear about revolutionizing technologies that tell the tale of faster and better harddrives, but have we really seen such great improvements? Sure, the storage capacity has improved and the harddrives have become slightly faster through technologies such as “perpendicular recording” and SATA. Fujitsu is expected to announce its latest technology soon.
Through ideally ordered patterns of nano-holes in aluminum they’ve been able to demo simple read/write functions. This advancement is expected to bring 1.2TB 2.5″ harddrives in three years, in 2010. PC-World has published an article on this very topic and even though Solid State Drives are advancing as well, we have a hard time imagining that mechanical drives will disappear and be replaced anytime soon.
