Intel has announced six new quad-core processors for high-end multiprocessor servers. The new Xeon 7300 series includes models from 1.86 GHz and 50W envelope up to 120W and 2.93 GHz. In between Intel has several model working in the 80W thermal envelope. This also completes the transition to the new Core architecture for Intel and the announcement was expected as AMD is in turn slated to launch its first K10 processors, code-named Barcelona, in just a few days. Along with the new Xeon 7300 series of processors Intel has also introduced the new Intel 7300 chipset, which is an important part of the platform.
“In addition to twice the cores, the 7300 series and Intel 7300 chipset offer up to four times the memory capacity of Intel’s previous MP platforms, enabling very large consolidation ratios that can reduce space, power and operation costs.”
Intel says that thanks to the new Xeon 7300 series and its virtualization technology, companies are now able to pool all of their server resources to create one, big virtual server infrastructure to improve load balancing, maintenance and such. And thanks to VT FlexMigration companies will be able to do seamless additions of the coming 45nm processors and platforms.
Intel recently made a rather large investment in VMware and the two have been working quite closely together to improve the virtualization performance of the Xeon 7300 series. Intel also announced multiple performance breakthroughs and world records being broken in several industry standard benchmarks.
The new Xeon 7300 series has already been adopted by the industry and more than 50 companies are expected to announce products using the new processors in the near future.
