AMD/ATI is aiming to launch the replacement chips for the current RV615 and RV630 graphics circuits in January, 2008, sources to DigiTimes claim. The new chips will be pin-compatible with the current ones, meaning they can use the same PCB. The chips will not be a significant upgrade performance-wise, but they will have some additional features and support. Among others DirectX 10.1, Shader Model 4.1, DisplayPort, and PCI Express 2.0. Samples are expected in October, but mass production will begin until January next year. The cards will be called Radeon HD 2500 and 2650, and sport slightly higher frequencies than the current low-end cards as they will be made using the new 55nm manufacturing process.
