Seagate has announced its first hybrid harddrive in the shape of a new 2.5″ SATA Momentus model. Seagate Momentus 5400 PSD (Power Savings Drive) sports ReadyDrive technology which use a technique called Superfetch that predicts the most frequently used data. This data is then stored on the integrated 256 MB flash memory. There will be models with 80, 120, and 160 GB capacity, and they all spin at 5400 RPM. These new drives are targeted for Windows Vista, simply because Windows XP doesn’t have native support for the ReadyDrive technology.
The reason Seagate decided to launch a 2.5″ model is that the biggest advantages of hybrid harddrives is the lower power consumption, but also an overall lower access time.
