We reported a while back about how MSI had announced the world’s first CrossFire X-ready motherboard. The problem was that neither AMD nor ATI had launched the concept of CrossFire X. We assumed that MSI was referring to the Tri- and QuadFire possibilities of the coming CrossFire technology. Recently we also posted some a report summarizing the rumors on 3-SLI and CrossFire, however it seems that the birdies were not entirely on the mark back then. According to a report by Xbitlabs, it seems that CrossFire X will be a lot more flexible than the sources of the first story implied.

While the addition of both a third and fourth card is for certain, there will also be features like CrossFire Overdrive and Hybrid CrossFire, which will improve the compatibility, overall performance and flexibility of the platform.

So it would seem that you will be able to mix cards to a higher degree than we first thought. Especially Hybrid CrossFire is supposed to improve the compatibility between integrated and discrete graphics circuits. Unfortunately there is no mention of mixing different discrete graphics cards. CrossFire Overdrive on the other hand is all about performance. It will allow for dynamic overclocking of the cards and improve the performance on a need for FPS basis.

CrossFire is slated for arrival before the end of the year, perhaps as soon as mid November.
