RV670 is a code-name that is starting to cause a lot of confusion. We have been pretty certain that this chip would be the base of AMD/ATI’s coming Radeon HD 2950 series, and it seemed especially certain when even ATI’s closest partners started listing graphics cards with this name, but now we’ve received new information that says the name has been changed, or been wrong all this time, to Radeon HD 3800. AMD, who recently revised its Phenom processor series naming, also revised the suffixes of the graphic card names. I could also be that there will be more cards than we firs thought.

All the PRO, XT, GT and XTX suffixes will disappear with the Radeon HD 3000 series though, instead the two last digits will be used to indicate the more precise performance of the cards. RV670PRO will be renamed Radeon HD 3850 while RV670XT will be renamed Radeon HD 3870. The cards will be launched on November 15, and it seems that these are the final names of ATI’s upcoming high-end graphics cards.
