Both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have been outsold by Nintendo since the launch of the much less powerful Wii. Nintendo Wii has been toping the sales list, but in September Xbox 360 managed to outsell Nintendo Wii on the American market, and it’s all thanks to one man; Master Chief of Halo 3. The launch of part three of the Halo saga from Microsoft gave Xbox 360 a huge boost as the console sales more or less doubled in September and peaked at 527,000 Xboxes. Nintendo Wii sold 501,000 units, while PlayStation 3 reached 119,400 consoles, which is still worse than the predecessor PS2 which reached 215,000 PlayStations.
The Halo series has been a huge success and even if the console sales are impressive, they’re nothing compared to the actual game sales.
“Unsurprisingly, Halo 3 obliterated the rest of the fray on the software sales charts. All three Halo 3 SKUs piled up to 3.3 million copies sold – a stunning figure given that the second place Wii Play moved 282,000 units.”
