On November 2nd Sony will release a new model of the PlayStation 3 and the new 40GB model is a stripped down version of the current flagship. Although Sony hasn’t just stripped the new consoles of some functions and features, but also revised the Cell processor, the heart of the console. It has namely, just like Microsoft, decided to upgrade to new and more efficient 65nm technology, which reduces the power consumption from the rather hefty 200 W to a considerable more pleasant 135 W. Except from the processor upgrade, Sony has also revised the cooling and motherboard of the console. This should mean that the new model will not only be more power efficient but also quieter and cooler, not that the current version is loud or especially hot. This should also mean that Sony has reduced the manufacturing cost.
