DivX Inc. has announced that DivX video technology will soon be integrated into Sony PlayStation 3. The console will be upgraded to support the commonly used video compression technology in a future software update, not a firmware update but a separate update. DivX is currently working on certifying the PlayStation 3 and making sure the PlayStation will be able to deliver top-notch DivX playback. Game developers will also be able to take advantage of the power of DivX through the recently updated SDK from Sony, which simply means it is possible for them to create in-game high-def DivX movies clips.
“We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3,” said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. “Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format.”
