PlayStation 3 has been lagging both Wii and Xbox 360 quite a lot in the sales. The high price has been suggested to be the main reason for this and after seeing how the consumers reacted after Sony cut the price of the 80 GB by $100 in the US and launched a new and cheaoer 40 GB model, we have to say that the price was indeed the reason for the lagging. Sales have tripled as more than 100,000 PlayStation 3s left the shelves during the first week of November. Before that, Sony sold an average of ~35,000 consoles per week. Sony believes this to be the turning point for PlayStation 3, but only the future knows for sure.
