Sony PlayStation 3 has always been the most expensive of the video game consoles, but there’s a good reason for it as the manufacturing cost was more than 800 USD at the launch. Much of the cost was because of Sony’s decision to use Blu-ray, and even if it has been an expensive investment, it is finally starting to pay off. Over the last few weeks, the Blu-ray format has gained several new exclusive partners and it seems that this is directly related to the video game console. It turns out that Sony has been able to lower the manufacturing cost from 800 USD to 400 USD through more efficient technology and general component optimizations.
It doesn’t say which of the PlayStation 3 consoles though, but we assume it’s the new 40GB model. Anyhow, Sony is finally getting some wind in its sails and it’s going to be an interesting period for Blu-ray and HD DVD as the struggle seem to be in favor of Blu-ray at the moment.
