NVIDIA is planning to counter ATI’s dual-core Radeon 3870X2 with a dual-PCB card sporting two G92 chips. Since G92 by itself is faster than the RV670 the potential is certainly there. Alas, reviews have shown that a RV670 CrossFire configuration is actually just as fast as G92 SLI, so when NVIDIA now is about to unveil the GeForce 9800GX2 on March 11, it might not be the supreme victor many were expecting. When we at the same time hear that 9800GTX will be clocked significantly higher, we’re starting to wonder whether this will be the faster of the two, at least at normal resolutions.

VR-zone has the story about the specifications of 9800GX2 and it states; 600MHz core clock. Pair that with 2x512MB via the 256-bit bus, and 128 shader processors operating at 1500MHz and you have the complete specifications. GeForce 9800GTX is rumored to sport frequencies up to 850MHz, and even beyond, and should prove to be faster in “lower”/normal resolutions. If you’re one of the lucky people with a 30” LCD monitor, GeForce 9800GX2 might be the better purchase, but the rest will most likely turn to the GTX version instead, which is slated for late March
