Sooner or later the DVD format would need a successor to keep up with the development on both the computer and home electronics market. The DVD format simply doesn’t sport enough storage to handle the size of modern games or HD movies. It turned out to be trickier than expected to create a successor to DVD as there were several large companies battling for the hundreds of billions that the optical market turns over. In 2006, two new formats entered the market, Blu-ray och HD DVD.

We all know how it ends, but the tides have been turning back and forth numerous times since the start, and over at Engadget HD they’ve published an article that goes in depth on the struggle between HD DVD and Blu-ray. Quite an interesting read for those who wants to know more about the format war that recently was, with Blu-ray as victor.
