We knew that there were people out there sitting on results over 31, 000 points in 3DMark 06. We just didn’t expect any of them to post at this stage. SF3D revealed his 31,000 score yesterday, but so did also German overclocker no_name. Both of them used CrossFireX setups with two Radeon HD 3870X2 cards cooled by liquid nitrogen. no_name was able to push his cards to higher frequencies and right now that gives him the edge with about 500 points. With his two Radeon HD 3870X2 clocked at 1054/1150MHz he was able to score 31,782 points in 3DMark 06.
The processor was only up to 5640MHz, which means that 32,000 will fall by the hands of an overclocker with a 5.8-5.9GHz setup. Hipro5 is the first that comes to mind. Liquid nitrogen was used to keep the four graphics cores at about -100°C.
The setup:
CPU: QX9650@5640 @ -135°C, Pot made by Otterauge
RAM: Mushkin DDR3 14400@7-6-5-15
PSU: Mushkin 800W Singlerail
Motherboard: ASUS P5E3WS
Graphics cards: 2x Sapphire Radeon HD 3870X2 @ -100°C, Pot made by Otterauge
Since he had the system up and running he decided to give 3DMark 03 a shot as well, and there he was able to break 130,000 points. The first to do so. With the processor running at slightly higher frequency, 5719MHz, he scored 131,826 points (not published at ORB). Simply breathtaking. CrossFireX seems to be working well in 3DMark at least, and based on what we’ve seen earlier, AMD seems to have a winner with its new multiGPU approach.
We’ll just have to wait and see if the new nForce 790i will help NVIDIA reclaim the throne. In 3DMark 03 it should be able to do so, but 3DMark 06 might be tougher.
