AU Optronics has announced a new LCD panel of the MoniTV series. This panel series will span across both TVs and monitors, all with full HD resolutions and unlike other monitors, AUO’s new panels will have correct HD resolutions. The Full HD standard says 1920×1080 pixels, which the TV market correctly follows with its 16:9 format. LCD monitors on the other hand, have a 16:10 aspect ratio, which results in resolutions like 1920×1200 and 1680×1050 pixels. This means that LCD monitors can’t show Full HD material without some kind of image manipulation, if you don’t want parts of the monitor to remain inactive.
AUO aims to change this through its new 16:9 LCD monitor panels, which is said to be the first in the world to support actual Full HD. It has revealed a 24″ panel with the new 16:9 aspect ratio and resolution, which is suppose to the first step toward uniting the monitor and TV market.
“AUO will continue to develop a series of 16:9 LCD panels for MoniTV application to meet the emerging trends of the convergence between the consumer monitor and personal TV with Full HD resolution. The full lineup includes 15-inch, 18.5-inch, 21.5-inch, 24-inch, 27-inch and 32-inch.”
Also, AUO points out that it has been able to slim down the new panels significantly, from 35mm to 14mm, which together with some new and aggressive power saving features makes the panels even more interesting.
The new and authentic Full HD 16:9 LCD monitors seem to sport some real advantages over current panels, but we’re still curious to see if people are willing to sacrifice the additional vertical space they’ve grown attached to.
