Sony is one of the few companies that has actually launched larger displays using OLED technology and in an interview with cnet, Stan Glasgow, head of Sony Electronics US, revealed that PC owners who are longing for the new and superthin technology will not be satisfied anytime soon. Sony is wholeheartedly focusing on the TV market with its OLED technology, but those who were expecting big TVs can stop looking because they are not coming anytime soon. In a few years we might see a 27″ model reach the market, but it will be a lot more expensive than competing LCD and PDP TVs.
“It’s going to be years and years until price points come down to where they’re anywhere close to LCD. In the not-too-distant future, you’ll have a choice in LCD at this size, or you can buy an OLED at the same size at a premium. I almost see it as a potential–and I don’t know this, nobody knows the answer–I almost see this as the upper end of flat-panel television.”
The goal is to have OLED TVs in the same sizes as current LCD and PDP TVs, while remaining superthin, perhaps become even thinner. The flat TVs of the future will be incredibly thin, but unfortunately there is still a long way to go before we will actually be in that future.
