Radeon HD 4870X2 is the next true high-end card from AMD. It has two RV770 GPUs on the same PCB and high-speed GDDR5 memory for quick memory access. Xtreme user guess2098 has been able to score a Diamond Radeon HD 4870X2 2GB and post some quick overclocking tests. The stock frequencies are the same as with Radeon HD 4870, although Diamond earlier announced the XOC version which not only operated at higher frequencies it could also be overclocked further than any other Radeon HD 4870 on the market.

guess2098 made some BIOS modifications and was able to up the frequency to 850MHz core clock and 4000MHz memory clock. One thing that you should make sure to remember though is that this card (Rev2) uses Hynix GDDR5 chips, not Qimonda (Rev1). Partners can choose either memory type, and we will have to wait for reviews to determine which of the two is preferred.

The results are in line with what we would expect from two Radeon HD 4870 in CrossFire. Without a direct comparison it’s hard to say whether the results are better or worse, right now we can only conclude that performance is on par with 4870 CrossFire in the 3DMark applications. Something which was also shown by the previews posted a while back.

We’re waiting for some additional tests with these Hynix chips, as Qimonda chips can do 4800MHz pretty easy they have more than a little to live up to.
