Radeon HD 4870 X2 is expected to launch on August 12, but with a just few days to go it seems like the first cards have already found their way on to the shelves in European stores. Several German/Austrian stores have listed the card (cheapest being 395 euro), and considering taxes and the weak dollar the card should cost around $500 in the US. Slightly more than NVIDIA’s flagship GeForce GTX 280, but then Radeon HD 4870X2 has also been proved to be faster in many games.
We are quite convinced that the two will be priced similarly and in less than a week we should know more about the true performance of Radeon HD 4870X2 as more mature drivers have been made available to reviewers. We would estimate Radeon HD 4870X2 to come out on top, but it all comes down how well AMD has managed to tweak and optimize the multi-GPU design.
