Apple is widely acknowledged for creating some of the industry’s best looking devices. This is course much thanks to the work of Jonathan Ive and the design team, but a design without a underlying practical support can render a product unusable in the hands of the user. Apple has managed to sidestep this conundrum quite well, but with products soon to be announced the biggest advancement is not the design or technological enhancements, but the manufacturing process, known as “Brick” around the web.
The new process creates the casing from a solid aluminum brick. Using a a set of laser and water-jet cutting tools, the manufacturer carves the case from a block of aluminum. This will result in less seams. less screws, while still being stronger than current designs. If rumors are true, Apple will unveil products made with the new process on October 14th.
