Acer has some pretty big plans for its netbook venture over the coming year and it has now been stated that Acer will be going for something more unique than Intel’s Atom processor next year, at least for the nettop family which will compete with other systems like the ASUS Eee Box and MSI Wind. According to sources at OEMs, Acer is planning a nettop for an early launch next year and it will based on either an AMD or VIA processor.

This means that Acer will not rely on Intel’s Atom processor that is used by the majority of all available netbooks. As most of you have most likely noticed it is not always easy to find Atom-based netbooks in stock and this is simply because the processor itself is short in supply. It is simply being used by so many different manufacturers that Intel can’t keep up.

Even if the situation will improve eventually, Acer has decided not to make things worse for its popular netbook Aspire One by announcing yet another Atom-based series of computers. Nettops are not as dependent on low power consumption, which opens up new possibilities for Acer in terms of choice of processor, as long as it is cheap and performs adequately.
